Steve has a background in recreational and competitive outdoor activities, combined with 30+ years of academic and professional training. This positions him uniquely within the ranks of UK outdoor activity providers.
His extensive practical experience in all the major outdoor activities is underpinned by a specialist understanding of the theory behind the practice – it’s a rare combination. This guarantees an expert and personalised approach as well as a commitment to supporting everyone to realise their adventure sports ambitions.
Steve originally studied Psychology and Physical Education before training as a teacher of Physical Education, Geography and Outdoor Education. During his 10 years of secondary school teaching, he progressed to become Head of Physical and Outdoor Education.
Shortly after completing his first Masters degree, Steve moved to become Curriculum Leader for Outdoor and Environmental Education for Cumbria Adult and Community Education. He was instrumental in developing, directing and managing a highly regarded range of courses encompassing vocational and academic training, national governing body qualifications, recreational courses, expeditions and an annual six week summer programme for over 400 children.
Following 10 years in that post, Steve gained a scholarship to further his research into skill acquisition and motor learning in outdoor sports and activities based at the University of Edinburgh.
His enthusiasm for coaching, guiding and adventure led him to set up Steve Banks Outdoors so he could continue to provide high quality outdoor and environmental experiences for individuals and groups. He caters for all levels of ability and ambition, and seeks to actively engage individuals fully in their own adventure learning and experience.
Steve is respected amongst his professional colleagues for his expertise in motor skill acquisition, and for his supportive, learner-centred approach to coaching and education.
